  1. CH3CO2H (common name acetic acid) in
  2. chemistry, one of the simplest members of a
  3. series of organic acids called fatty acids.
  4. In the pure state it is a colourless liquid
  5. with an unpleasant pungent odour; it
  6. solidifies to an icelike mass of crystals at
  7. 16.7 degrees C/70.9 degrees F, and hence is
  8. often called glacial acetic acid. Vinegar is
  9. 3-6% ethanoic acid. Cellulose (derived from
  10. wood, etc.) is treated with ethanoic acid to
  11. produce a cellulose acetate solution, which
  12. can be used to make plastic items by
  13. injection moulding, or extruded to form
  14. synthetic textile fibres.
